Collins Tile and Stone

I really enjoyed the field trip to Collins Tile and Stone because I have never been out to a granite yard before. I thought it was really interesting to learn about the different types of granite available to designers and consumers. I also was interested in learning that there are a few very commons types of granite that are readily available and are able to be sold at a lower price. It was also very cool to actually be able to see pieces of stone being cut and polished or honed by the machines and men that operate them. It’s hard to imagine that kind of process and machinery without actually seeing it firsthand.

Leftwich Chapman

Leftwich Chapman is a flooring store in Lubbock. Going to their store was a really fun and informative experience. I learned a lot especially about wood flooring. I found it helpful to learn about solid woods and veneers and laminates and what makes each different and why some floors are so expensive while others can be sold at a relatively low price. I think it was good to find out when certain floors were appropriate and when it was worth it to spend the extra money to get a higher quality product.

Photo Analysis

I found this image very appealing to me because of its cool colors and strong contrast. Its forms are very organic, as can be seen in the clouds and the shape of the water. The variety in this picture comes from the different colors and they way they are contrasted with much of the bolder and darker colors on the top portion of the image and some of the lighter colors on the bottom part. There is a natural balance to the photo because of the reflection of the sky in the puddle on the bottom half. The reflection of the sky also gives a sense of balance to the image. The lighting in this picture is very interesting in the way it creates so many highlights and shadows. I liked that the shadows and highlights in the clouds really allowed the fluffy texture of the clouds to be shown. For my color scheme I pulled five different colors out of the photo that I felt were a good representation of the variety in the image. I like the cool blues and grey but the earthy tones of the green and sand balance them out.
